March 14 (aka 3/14) is the day math lovers celebrate Pi…the number π, that is. Pi (or π) stands for the ratio of a circles circumference to its diameter. It’s an irrational number with infinite non-repeating number. If you take the circumference (distance around) any circle and divide it by the diameter (the distance across), you’ll always get π which, when rounded to two decimal places is 3.14 (or 3/14 or March 14).
As a former math teacher and geometry lover (proofs of the non-euclidean sort were always my favorite), Pi Day is a holiday in my house. We celebrate by calculating pi, reading Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi, and eating all sorts of round foods, like PIE!
Pi Day Foods are usually a full day experience, from pancakes or quiche for breakfast and pizza for lunch or dinner. And while rainbow fruit pizza or a brownie pizza is another delicious way to celebrate, pie is of course the preferred dessert of the day.
Any kind of pie is perfect to celebrate π day, but here are some of my favorite easy recipes you can make and eat all in one day.
