Bananas and Golden Oreos taste so good together…so why not make a Banana Golden Oreo Cupcake? These fluffy banana cupcakes have a crust – a Golden Oreo crust!
Jordan started theatre camp this week. I mean, it’s a total stretch for her, being an actress. She’s totally shy, reserved, and never wants to sing, dance, or act anything out.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
{If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, or follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that was all untrue.}
Jordan embodies drama. That girl is going to win an Oscar someday, I swear. I’m really hoping she loves theatre camp, because for almost 8 years we’ve been trying different things, to see what sticks. Dancing definitely did…but acting? I mean, can’t you just see it?
Theatre and Jordan are two things that, I think, belong together.
Bananas and Golden Oreos? That’s another one.
Something about the spiciness of the Golden Oreos pairs perfectly with the flavor of the banana. I made Banana Cream Pie with a Golden Oreo Crust last year and it is still one of my favorites.
When I was coming up with cupcake ideas for Teacher Appreciation week (yes, I made these months ago, my bad) I had a bag of Golden Oreos in my cabinet and I wanted to use them in cupcakes. Immediately I thought of banana, because banana cake is one of my favorites! Each cupcake got a Golden Oreo cookie crust. It’s super easy – just pop one in the bottom of the cupcake liner, then top it with the batter.
The batter is bananas through and through…and it’s super easy because it starts with cake mix. Honestly, my favorite cakes come from cake mix. I’m still trying to find that perfect scratch cake/cupcake..but until I do, doctored cake mixes it is!
And then, if Golden Oreos and banana cake wasn’t good enough, these are topped with cream cheese frosting. Bananas and cream cheese frosting totally go together. It must be a fruit/veggie cake thing. Carrot cake and cream cheese frosting is a must. Same with Red Velvet. And banana. Banana cake MUST have cream cheese frosting!
I made this frosting using vanilla bean paste. See all those flecks of vanilla? You can use regular extract, but if you can find vanilla bean paste (they sell it at Sur la Table and Williams Sonoma) you must try it. The vanilla flavor is unbelievable.
Golden Oreos + Banana Cupcakes + Cream Cheese Frosting = the Perfect Cupcake Trifecta
The perfect pairings.
Like Jordan and theatre…I hope!
Banana Golden Oreo Cupcakes
Ingredients
For the Cupcakes:
- 30 Golden Oreos plus more for garnish
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 2 tired bananas with brown spots
- 1/4 cup oil
- 3 eggs
- 3/4 cup water
For the Frosting:
- 8 ounces cream cheese softened
- 1 stick 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1-2 tablespoons heavy cream if needed for consistency
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line pans with cupcake liners (makes about 30 cupcakes). Place a Golden Oreo in the bottom of each liner.
- Place bananas in a large bowl. Mash with a potato masher until completely smushed. Add cake mix, oil, eggs, and water. Mix for 30 seconds on low speed with a hand mixer, then 2 minutes on medium.
- Scoop into prepared pans, filling about 3/4 full. Bake for 14-15 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
- To make frosting: beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Slowly add powdered sugar and mix, 1 cup at a time, until combined. Add vanilla and beat until smooth. If needed to reach piping consistency, add a tablespoon of heavy cream (or 2). I didn't need to use any cream. Frost or pipe onto cupcakes (I used a 1M tip) and top with a 1/2 or full Golden Oreo.
- Store in refrigerator.

Too much sugar for the frosting other than that not bad
These sound fabulous! I just found Chocolate Covered Strawberry Oreos. Those could make something similar to a banana split cupcake! Can’t wait to try!!! Thank you for the amazing inspiration! And the pictures are absolutely perfect 🙂
