Do you like cheese on apple pie? This Apple Gorgonzola Crostata is the perfect lunch or dessert! It is so similar to a classic apple pie recipe, but more versatile! Top it off with some yummy gorgonzola cheese!

The Best Apple Crostata

My favorite pie is apple pie, so creating this was so fun! This crostata, which is a galette or rustic crusted pie, is made with apples and topped with gorgonzola and walnuts: it’s a savory apple pie!

The buttery gorgonzola cheese makes this recipe! You can use whatever apples you choose: like Granny Smith and Gala. It’s an apple pie with cheese inside, instead of on top.

Ingredients Needed

  • Apples: Whatever kind you’d like – I recommend Granny Smith.
  • Sugar: Granulated sugar to sweeten the apples.
  • Cinnamon: A must in anything apple!
  • Walnuts: You can substitute pecans.
  • Gorgonzola Cheese: Also known as Italian blue cheese.
  • Pie Crust: Use my homemade pie crust recipe or a refrigerated crust.

How to make Apple Gorgonzola Crostata

  • Melt butter in a medium frying pan over medium-low heat.
  • Add thinly sliced apples, cinnamon, and sugar and cook, stirring occasionally, until they just start to become transparent, but not enough that they become mushy (about 5 minutes).
  • Stir lemon, zest, walnuts, and cheese into the apple mixture.
  • Unroll pie crust onto prepared cookie sheet.
  • Pour apple mixture onto the center of the crust and spread it out so that there is about a 1” border around the edge.
  • Fold up the edge over the apples, crimping as needed to go around the circle, creating a crust. Brush with egg wash.
  • Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the crust starts to get golden brown. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.

  • If you don’t like gorgonzola cheese, you can use another kind! Substitute with any gourmet cheese: white cheddar, bleu cheese, or brie would be amazing!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound apples
  • 2 tablespoons (28g) unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons (25g) sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Zest of one small lemon
  • Juice of ½ lemon, (about 1 tablespoon)
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts
  • ½ cup crumbled Gorgonzola Cheese
  • 1 refrigerated pie crust, from a pack of two
  • Egg wash

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • Peel and core your apples, then slice them thin.
  • Melt butter in a medium frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the apples, cinnamon, and sugar and cook, stirring occasionally, until they just start to become transparent, but not enough that they become mushy (about 5 minutes).
  • Remove from heat and let sit for 10 minutes.
  • Unroll pie crust onto prepared cookie sheet.
  • Stir lemon, zest, walnuts, and cheese into the apple mixture. Pour apple mixture onto the center of the crust and spread it out so that there is about a 1” border around the edge. Fold up the edge over the apples, crimping as needed to go around the circle, creating a crust.
  • Whisk egg with a splash of water and using a small brush or your fingers, spread some around the edge of the crust. (This will give it a golden brown look.) You won’t use all the egg.
  • Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the crust starts to get golden brown. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.
