These Easy Mermaid Cupcakes are the perfect birthday cupcake! Easy to make and fun to decorate; they’re the perfect celebration cupcake or just a fun activity to do on a summer day.
If you guys didn’t know, I’m super passionate about Mermaids (and unicorns, rainbows, and now, llamas). I think the 10-year-old girl in me was dormant until I hit 34 and then all bets were off: I want fun, sparkly pink and teal all the things.
No joke: one of my favorite relaxing activities I like to do is search and scroll Pinterest for things like Mermaid Cupcakes, Unicorn cakes, and rainbow treats. I also love to look for gorgeous cakes and sprinkle concoctions because just looking at them makes me happy. (Do you follow me on Instagram? Recently I redecorated my office in a rainbow sprinkle theme – no joke.)
I think one of the reasons I love looking at all those over-the-top cakes and fun decorated cupcakes is that, even though I’m a baker-by-trade, I cannot do intricate and fun detail work to save my life. Rosette cakesare my only specialty and thank goodness for sprinkle covered cakesto cover up my mistakes. So, when Wilton asked if I wanted to try their new DIY-Lish KitsI jumped at the chance. Who wouldn’t want to make super cute cupcakes that look professional in about half the time with half the mess (and zero tears). And the result will actually look like the picture!
Making Mermaid Cupcakes with cute mermaid cupcake toppers was never easier than with one of these DIY-Lish Kits!
The best part about the kit is that they come with everything you need to make the cupcakes (except the cupcakes, which we’ll talk about in a minute).
There are four kits to choose from: Cute Critters, Lollipop Candy Making, Gummy, and this Mermaid Cupcake decorating kit. It was hard for me to choose which one to feature but I finally settled on the Mermaid Kit.
(That’s a lie. There really was no deliberation. I mean I’m a unicorn mermaid cupcake at heart. But once I did look at all of them, I longed to make every single kit!)
Inside the box is everything you need to assemble your cupcakes:
- Cute cupcake liners
- Themed sprinkles
- Candy Melts and a mermaid cupcake topper mold
- Disposable decorating bags and tips
If you search mermaid cupcakes on google or Pinterest, you’re going to see a ton that come up with these fun mermaid tail cupcake toppers. Have you ever wondered how to make them easily? Using a mold, of course!
If you’ve never used a candy mold you’re in for a treat: they’re fantastic. I used to make dipped Oreos using molds and other fun shapes all the time before blogging. There’s something so satisfying about popping out a candy from a mold and knowing it’s going to look fabulous!
(BTW, if you’re not super up on how to melt and work with candy without crying watch my video.)
How to make mermaid cupcake toppers
Basically, all you have to do is melt the candy that comes in the kit and add it to one of the plastic decorating bags. Then pipe the melted candy into the mold. Tap it a few times to settle, chill, and then you have a mermaid tail cupcake topper!
There is enough candy in the kit to make 12 cupcake toppers, 6 each of blue and pink.
Bonus: you get to keep the mold. Buy any of the Wilton Candy Melts in any color and you have an infinite number of mermaid tail toppers for every occasion!
Let’s talk about cupcakes! You can use any cupcake flavor and frosting you want for these. I decided on using Funfetti Cupcakeswith vanilla frosting. Funfetti is so much fun and the vanilla frosting shows off the decorations. But you can do anything your tastebuds desire.

If you ever worry about not being able to make something look like a photo, these kits are for you. They’re designed to allow anyone to easily make wow-worthy treats!
These kits would be perfect for tweens and up; everything was designed for them in mind. I mean, I’m sure the creators thought about 40-year-old mermaid loving moms too, but I’m thinking that tweens were a driving force.
The kits are one-time use and they include easy to follow, step-by-step instructions, tools, and the exact amount of ingredients to decorate your cupcakes.
Whether you’re making these for a birthday or letting your child decorate themselves on a summer afternoon, they are an easy way to experiment with new decorating techniques and create desserts that show off their personality.
Use these baking kits to make the birthday cupcakes of your dreams – easily!
I had so much fun creating these cupcakes that it made me want to do more. I can’t wait to try the other kits – the popsicle one looks so cute for summer!
No matter what kind of cupcake you use – homemade, cake mix, or store bought – everyone will ooh and ahh over how cute they are.

Easy Mermaid Cupcakes
- Place the pink candy melts in a microwave safe bowl. Tip: I like to use paper bowls for easy clean up. Melt in 30 second increments, stirring between each, until melted and smooth. Place melted candy into one of the piping bags and snip off the tip. Pipe into tail molds, tap molds to settle. Chill to set.
- Once the pink tails are hardened, release from the mold by turning upside down.
- Repeat step 1 with the blue candy melts.
- Frost cupcakes with desired tip from the cupcake kit. (The kit comes with a round tip and a start tip.)
- Top cupcakes with sprinkles and a mermaid tail.
