Trail Mix Muddy Buddies

There are many things that, when placed in front of me, I can’t stop eating. Two of those things are Muddy Buddies and Trail Mix.

There really was no hope for me when I made this recipe. Trail Mix Muddy Buddies…welcome to my addiction.

Trail Mix Muddy Buddies combines two favorite snacks: muddy buddies and trail mix!

Speaking of addiction, does anyone know where I can get a DVD of the new Annie movie before it comes out? I need it by February 19th. Anyone know anyone at Columbia pictures? Anyone?

Have you seen the new Annie? Mel took Jordan the weekend it came out.

Then Jordan went and saw it with her cousin.

Then she came home and begggggggggged me to take her, so I did.

Were you counting? Jordan saw Annie three times in less than two weeks. And the second we got home from #3? She was begging to see it again.

This leads me to why I need the DVD before it’s official release. Can you imagine the mom-of-the-year status I would get if I got her the movie for her birthday??? AND it would mean she could have an Annie themed party?

Please? Anyone? (Non-pirated, official copies, obvi.)

Muddy buddies for life?

Trail Mix Muddy Buddies combines two favorite snacks: muddy buddies and trail mix!

As much as Jordan is obsessed with Annie, I’m obsessed with muddy buddies (aka puppy chow). I’ve made several versions before, and I just can’t stop. Won’t stop.

The only problem I have with this super addicting snack is I can’t stop eating it. Like, ever. So if I make a bag…it’ll be gone in minutes. If someone sends me a bag for Christmas? Gone in minutes.

{Which is why I made this and sent it as Christmas gifts. Bwahahaha.}

I wanted to make a new flavor but, in all truthfulness, I love the regular puppy chow flavor: peanut butter and chocolate. Who doesn’t love that one most??

So instead of reinventing the wheel, I reinvented the mix. I made muddy buddies…into trail mix!

This recipe makes as much volume as the regular recipe does, but I cut down on the amount of actual muddy buddies made. With the addition of trail mix ingredients, like peanuts and raisins, the amount you make is the same, but the sugary addictiveness is cut down a notch. Also? I used a lot less butter. #yourewelcome

Unless you can’t stop eating Trail Mix. Then I’m really sorry.

I prefer traditional trail mix: peanuts, M&Ms, and raisins. (<– I know, I said raisins. No, I still don’t love raisins. But trail mix is one of the places I actually enjoy them.) But the beauty of this recipe is that you can add whatever trail mix flavors you like!

  • Craisins
  • Reese’s Pieces
  • Other dried fruits like mango, pineapple, or coconut
  • Almonds, cashews…any nut you like!

Me? I’m a purist. I’m also boring. But I know most of you aren’t. So get to mixing! This recipe is perfect for giving, but I love it for snacking…and parties. Like football parties. Or Valentine’s Day parties. Or a random “I want Muddy Buddies” parties.

Or 10th birthday Annie parties. Seriously, can anyone hook me up??

Did you make this recipe?

Trail Mix Muddy Buddies

Your favorite Muddy Buddies...with trail mix! Added peanuts, raisins, and M&Ms add a depth to the puppy chow, making a fun new twist on an old favorite recipe!

  • 5 cups Chex cereal (any flavor)

  • 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips

  • 1/3 cup creamy peanut butter

  • 1 tablespoon butter (unsalted or salted)

  • 1-2 cups powdered sugar

  • 2 cups peanuts (I like to use Honey Roasted; use your favorite)

  • 1-2 cups raisins, to taste

  • 1 cup plain M&Ms (or Reese’s Pieces would be good too)

  1. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silpat baking mat. Place 1 cup powdered sugar in a large gallon sized ziploc bag.

  2. Place milk chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in a large bowl. Microwave for 1 minute, stir, then heat in additional 30 second increments, stirring after each, until mixture is melted and smooth. Place Chex cereal into the peanut butter chocolate mixture and stir to coat.

  3. Place the cereal mixture into the powdered sugar bag and seal. Shake to coat the cereal. Turn it out onto prepared cookie sheet. Let the muddy buddies harden and cool.

  4. Optional: once they cool, give them a toss in another coat of powdered sugar (up to 1 cup) for a super white look.

  5. Once cooled, place muddy buddies, peanuts, raisins, and M&Ms into a large gallon size bag. I added 1 cup of raisins but if you love them, add up to 2 cups. Shake to mix, then serve or seal for later use. Store in the airtight bag/container for up to 5 days.

You're not limited to traditional trail mix ingredients. Substitute your favorite nuts, candy, and dried fruit to make your favorite snack.

  1. Cannot even make this because like you, two of my fave things are trail mix and muddy buddies. I cannot even imagine the addictive powers of this 🙂 pinned!

  2. Yum! I am the same way; good luck getting me away from a bowl with either trail mix or mud buddies. Now I can only imaging how glued I would be to a bowl of trail mix mud buddies! I must be pretty boring, too though because I definitely agree that you can’t beat the chocolate+peanut butter mud buddies or the m&m+peanuts+raisins combo for trail mix!

  3. I’ve never had muddy buddies/puppy chow (ACK!). Must. Fix. Immediately.

  4. You just combined two of my favorite snacks! Yeah, set a bowl of this in front of me and there’s no stopping.

  5. I can only imagine that this is beyond addicting! YUM!

  6. I want to dive right in. Fist after fist. I never can resist muddy buddies. Mmmm….

    Happy January Dorothy!

  7. The fact that you can’t stop eating these means I must try them.

  8. I was just trying to figure out how to use some trail mix that has been in the pantry forever and this is perfect!

  9. Oh my, I would snack on them all day long if I could!

  10. Wow, you should be singing all of the songs from Annie in no time at all! Muddy Buddies are definitely a weakness of mine; once you start munching, you can’t stop, pinned! x

  11. I could eat all the trail mix muddy buddies and feel no guilt. Seriously, this stuff looks amazing!

  12. How have I never tried muddy buddies?! I’m trying to do a healthy thing but… I’m thinking these are a must try very soon!

  13. Even my 9 year son saw the movie and came home wanting to see it again. Did you guys see the actors on The Kitchen a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t even realize it was a new movie until then. If you can catch that rerun, they were really cute. I can’t even go near muddy buddies, I’m a snacker which means I never feel like I’ve eaten a lot until at the end of the day the whole batch is GONE, not good. Some things I have to make and give away too.

  14. I haven’t seen the new Annie movie YET, but I get Jordan’s addiction.  I was around her age when the original came out and my mom took me to see it twice IN THE THEATER.  Going to the theater was a big deal back then.  🙂  And the second time, I went wearing my official Annie dress, locket, and wig, no joke.

And trail mix muddy buddies?  Yeah, I fairly certain I wouldn’t stop eating until I reached the bottom of this bowl.

  15. I’m addicted already, and I haven’t even tried it yet

  16. This is pure brilliance! It is such a simple idea but brilliant! I share your lack of self control when it comes to puppy chow. Can’t stop, won’t stop! I am picturing this with cookie dough chunks mixed in. Horribly delicious? Deliciously horrible? Yum!

  17. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that I’ve never seen this before but it makes SO. MUCH. SENSE!! Love it!

  18. Man am I happy that this is at your house and not mine.  You get to deal with that whole “will power” thing and not me weeee!  Okay, no seriously I want this in my house.  I really do but I can’t have it because between my boyfriend and I’s sweet teeth, it will be GONE in a day.

  19. Wishing SO HARD that I knew someone at Columbia!!  Also, these were AMAZING!  I can totally attest to their addictiveness since I was one of your victims.  Mwah! 🙂

  20. Well this just looks positively addicting!! Sign me up for a whole batch!

  21. Seriously I need to try these muddy buddy things I’ve been seeing all over the internet, that I had never even heard of a few months ago!  Where have I been?  Evidently this is an amazing snack that I need to try ASAP!  And really, anything with trail mix is awesome, so I’m sure this is too!  🙂

  22. I can see how addictive this is. Honestly, I can’t stop eating trail mix. Then I see trail mix with muddy buddies…. I’m doomed.

  23. Yep, this would be bad news (and deliciously wonderful news!) in our house! The recipe makes one serving… right?

  24. If I was to make this muddy buddie mix. it definitely would NOT last long. I have no self control when it comes to sweet nibbles like this Dorothy!

  25. Love this colorful mix!! Perfect snack treat!

  26. Amazing! This looks delicious! We need to get chex cereal in Australia!

  27. Best snack ever, Dorothy! I’m so addicted to muddy buddies, too. And trail mix? My husband could eat that all day long. This sounds like the perfect combination for both of us! Pinned!

  28. Short of resorting to bootlegging…you might be out of luck. Unless every kid in America is not like Jordan, the movie tanks, and it goes direct to DVD. What a bummer! Well, you can always buy her some primo merchandise, the soundtrack, etc. And as for these muddy buddies, you’ve put together two of my kryptonites! Love this combo!

  29. Oh man what have you done? This is definitely a dangerous combination of my favorites. Only to be made when others can help share otherwise I would be doomed (in a good way) to eat it all myself.

  30. These are two snacks that I can’t stop eating when I start…this mix would not last long around me!!!  Such a fun way to mix the two together!!!

  31. Could eat on this all day 🙂

  32. Seriously, what a great idea! Trail mix in muddy buddies… The stars have aligned, and my life is now complete.

  33. This is so tempting! Delicious!!!

  34. I actually have never made muddy buddies…although I have eaten them…not sure I could resist a trail mix version…Trail mix is far too addicting and the serving size is always a tenth of what I really want to eat! This looks dangerous!

  35. Love the name of this trail mix and it will be great for snacking. 🙂

  36. I wish I could get that DVD to you because I for one have never tried any of the Muddy Buddies, but anything coated in powdered sugar gets a big #winwin from me.

  37. I LOVE muddy buddies!! I made some for Christmas this year and no one could stop eating them! They’re so addicting!!!! I also love trail mix so I’ll definitely try this out next time I make these incredible snacks!

  38. I haven’t seen the new Annie yet, but sounds like I should! Your version of muddy buddies looks like the perfect movie snack…but dangerously good! I would probably snack away the whole batch without even noticing!

  39. I love this version of muddy buddies! My aunt would always make the festively colored muddy buddies she called “reindeer food” around Christmas time and would beef it up with salty pretzel sticks, puffed cereal, peanuts and raisins. I picked around the raisins 🙂

  40. Oh my, love that you combined trail mix and muddy buddies! I could snack on this all day long until the entire batch is gone! It looks totally irresistible!

  41. muddy buddies are one of those magically disappearing snacks. I swear I want to eat the whole plate!!

  42. This would be so dangerous in my house! What a great combo! If I find anyway to get Annie, I’ll let you know 😉

  43. Trail mix is like the devil’s work… Because it is SO sinfully addictive! I really love the ones with the equivalent of Reese’s pieces. And yes, I always pick out the chocolate in every single one. Guilty as charged. 😉 Pinned!
