There are many things that, when placed in front of me, I can’t stop eating. Two of those things are Muddy Buddies and Trail Mix.

There really was no hope for me when I made this recipe. Trail Mix Muddy Buddies…welcome to my addiction.

PIN IT NOW TO SAVE FOR LATER!

Trail Mix Muddy Buddies combines two favorite snacks: muddy buddies and trail mix!

Speaking of addiction, does anyone know where I can get a DVD of the new Annie movie before it comes out? I need it by February 19th. Anyone know anyone at Columbia pictures? Anyone?

Have you seen the new Annie? Mel took Jordan the weekend it came out.

Then Jordan went and saw it with her cousin.

Then she came home and begggggggggged me to take her, so I did.

Were you counting? Jordan saw Annie three times in less than two weeks. And the second we got home from #3? She was begging to see it again.

This leads me to why I need the DVD before it’s official release. Can you imagine the mom-of-the-year status I would get if I got her the movie for her birthday??? AND it would mean she could have an Annie themed party?

Please? Anyone? (Non-pirated, official copies, obvi.)

Muddy buddies for life?

Trail Mix Muddy Buddies combines two favorite snacks: muddy buddies and trail mix!

As much as Jordan is obsessed with Annie, I’m obsessed with muddy buddies (aka puppy chow). I’ve made several versions before, and I just can’t stop. Won’t stop.

The only problem I have with this super addicting snack is I can’t stop eating it. Like, ever. So if I make a bag…it’ll be gone in minutes. If someone sends me a bag for Christmas? Gone in minutes.

{Which is why I made this and sent it as Christmas gifts. Bwahahaha.}

I wanted to make a new flavor but, in all truthfulness, I love the regular puppy chow flavor: peanut butter and chocolate. Who doesn’t love that one most?? Instead of reinventing the wheel, I reinvented the mix. I made muddy buddies…into trail mix! This has become one of my favorite Chex Mix Muddy Buddies flavors!

This recipe makes as much volume as the regular recipe does, but I cut down on the amount of actual muddy buddies made. With the addition of trail mix ingredients, like peanuts and raisins, the amount you make is the same, but the sugary addictiveness is cut down a notch. Also? I used a lot less butter. #yourewelcome

Unless you can’t stop eating Trail Mix. Then I’m really sorry.

How do you make muddy buddies?

They’re so easy to make with peanut butter, chocolate, and butter. Once the cereal is coated, you just shake it in powdered sugar. It’s not a nutritious snack, and it’s messy, but it’s so good!

I prefer traditional trail mix: peanuts, M&Ms, and raisins. (<– I know, I said raisins. No, I still don’t love raisins. But trail mix is one of the places I actually enjoy them.) But the beauty of this recipe is that you can add whatever trail mix flavors you like!

  • Craisins
  • Reese’s Pieces
  • Other dried fruits like mango, pineapple, or coconut
  • Almonds, cashews…any nut you like!

Me? I’m a purist. I’m also boring. But I know most of you aren’t. So get to mixing! This recipe is perfect for giving, but I love it for snacking…and parties. Like football parties. Or Valentine’s Day parties. Or a random “I want Muddy Buddies” parties.

Or 10th birthday Annie parties. Seriously, can anyone hook me up??

Your favorite Muddy Buddies...with trail mix! Added peanuts, raisins, and M&Ms add a depth to the puppy chow, making a fun new twist on an old favorite recipe!

Ingredients

  • 5 cups Chex cereal — any flavor
  • 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon butter — unsalted or salted
  • 1-2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 cups peanuts — I like to use Honey Roasted; use your favorite
  • 1-2 cups raisins — to taste
  • 1 cup plain M&Ms — or Reese’s Pieces would be good too

Instructions

  1. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silpat baking mat. Place 1 cup powdered sugar in a large gallon sized ziploc bag.
  2. Place milk chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in a large bowl. Microwave for 1 minute, stir, then heat in additional 30 second increments, stirring after each, until mixture is melted and smooth. Place Chex cereal into the peanut butter chocolate mixture and stir to coat.
  3. Place the cereal mixture into the powdered sugar bag and seal. Shake to coat the cereal. Turn it out onto prepared cookie sheet. Let the muddy buddies harden and cool.
  4. Optional: once they cool, give them a toss in another coat of powdered sugar (up to 1 cup) for a super white look.
  5. Once cooled, place muddy buddies, peanuts, raisins, and M&Ms into a large gallon size bag. I added 1 cup of raisins but if you love them, add up to 2 cups. Shake to mix, then serve or seal for later use. Store in the airtight bag/container for up to 5 days.

  4. I actually have never made muddy buddies…although I have eaten them…not sure I could resist a trail mix version…Trail mix is far too addicting and the serving size is always a tenth of what I really want to eat! This looks dangerous!

  8. I haven’t seen the new Annie yet, but sounds like I should! Your version of muddy buddies looks like the perfect movie snack…but dangerously good! I would probably snack away the whole batch without even noticing!

  9. I love this version of muddy buddies! My aunt would always make the festively colored muddy buddies she called “reindeer food” around Christmas time and would beef it up with salty pretzel sticks, puffed cereal, peanuts and raisins. I picked around the raisins 🙂

  14. added chocolate covered raisins & dried cherries (instead of raisins) along with mixed nuts. also, used peanut butter m&m’s in red & green. delish!
