What is a frosting board?
A frosting board is a board or platter that’s spread with frosting and surrounded by dippers. It’s like dip without the bowl – and it’s a sweet relative of the butter board trend. It’s an easy way to make a fun sweet treat for any party or holiday!
Why you’ll love this recipe
- It’s so cute – perfect for Christmas!
- Use semi-homemade ingredients or make your ownl.
- You can change this recipe in so many different ways!

Ingredients in a Christmas Frosting Board
- Frosting – you can use a can of frosting (no shame in that!) or make homemade. My vanilla buttercream would be fantastic in this.
- Food Coloring – since we’re making a Christmas tree, you’ll want green food coloring. I love gel food colors best.
- Candy and Sprinkles – these are to decorate your tree! Use whatever you like; I also used a mini Snickers bar for the trunk.
- Parchment Paper – I recommend lining your board with parchment paper or wax paper. This is for easy clean-up but also to protect the wood – the oils from the frosting can seep into the board and stain it.
- Dippers – You can use anything you like for dipping! I made mini chocolate chip cookies from a refrigerated pack but you can also make homemade.

How to make a Frosting Board
- If you’re using a wood board, line it with parchment paper to protect the board.
- Color your frosting green and spread it on the board in a Christmas tree shape.
- Sprinkle the frosting with mini candies and sprinkles to resemble ornaments and lights. Add the tree stump with a candy bar.
- Add a star to the tree, either from other cookies or sprinkles.
- Surround the frosting tree with dippers and serve.
Recipe Swaps
- Use vanilla buttercream for a homemade board.
- Make homemade cookies for dippers: chocolate chip cookies or sugar cookies would be perfect.
- Do any color and shape you want! Make a snowman with white frosting or change this up for other holidays and events.
- Use other dippers: pretzels, fruit, crackers or so many other things.

FAQs
You don’t – you can use wax paper or skip it, but I use the parchment to protect my wood boards from getting stained.
I don’t recomment making this more than an hour ahead – the frosting will harden over time.
It’s not that different than having dips in a bowl – as long as people don’t double dip you’re totally fine.
