Slow Cooker Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread is easy to make and cooks in a crockpot!

I have monkey bread on the brain, y’all. Which is why this recipe comes at the perfect time: Slow Cooker Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread.

That’s a pretty big mouthful of a title…but it’s a pretty good one at that.

Slow Cooker Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread is made with cinnamon rolls in a crockpot!

Until recently I used my slow cooker for one of three things: Salsa Chicken, Pot Roast, or Crockpot Marinara Sauce. Then, over the summer, I learned you could make dump cake in the crockpot. Then, a few weeks ago, I learned you could make actual cake in the slow cooker.

Like, those discoveries? #lifechanging

All my life I’ve been making dessert in the oven and my slow cooker has sat, mostly dusty, on the garage shelf, only making occasional appearances at dinner. Poor crock pot, so neglected. Not anymore!

Last week I bought two cans of Pillsbury Grands! Cinnamon Rolls because (1) I’m addicted to those suckers (and, yes I do work for them but no this is not sponsored, I really do love them) and (2) I was going to make baked french toast with them. And then I got scooped; Heather made Apple Cinnamon French Toast Bake. I almost cried…and then I remembered Monkey Bread.

It is almost Christmas, after all. Monkey Bread rules the day on Christmas in our house. I decided…why not make monkey bread? With Cinnamon Rolls? In the SLOW COOKER???

Guess what? I like this monkey bread way better than when it’s made in the oven. Way, way better.

You can make monkey bread in a crockpot!

The reason I love it so much more? Because it’s more doughy.

I find that, when I make monkey bread in the oven the outside gets so hard and crunchy and done in order for the center to get fully cooked. I prefer my monkey bread to be soft, not hard, so this creates a problem. It’s like a fight to the death: who will get to the center of the monkey bread first?

By making the monkey bread in the crockpot, the bread steams as it cooks, keeping it soft and doughy but actually baked all over. It’ll get a little browned around the edges, as you can see, but even the browned parts stay soft.

That’s the perfect monkey bread, if you ask me!

You can make a traditional monkey bread this way, using Grands! biscuits, but I went one step further and used cinnamon rolls because, well, why not? Cinnamon rolls > Biscuits in my opinion.

Plus? Cinnamon Rolls come with icing.

The prep for this recipe is less than 20 minutes. You open your two cans of cinnamon rolls (5 rolls per can) and cut each into 6 pieces. Shake the pieces in cinnamon sugar to coat, then you layer them in the slow cooker with a melted butter and brown sugar mixture.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

My crockpot baked this in about 2 hours. The edges were browned, the center looked like it might not be done, but upon testing with a toothpick, it was. Note: not all slow cookers are created equal. Mine is a digital model, about 10 years old. I cooked it on the HIGH 4-hour setting and it was done in 2 hours. Because your machine might cook differently, be sure to watch it after an hour, then check again at an hour and a half.

This will feed a lot of people, probably 8-10 unless you’re my family, then 4. 😉 Drizzle the top with the cinnamon roll icing like syrup and you have monkey bread that everyone will remember (and request again and again).

But is that really a bad thing? 🙂

Slow Cooker Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread

Yield: 8-10 servings

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 2 hours

Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes

Make your favorite Monkey Bread...in a slow cooker! Use Grands! Cinnamon Rolls instead of biscuits for a new twist on an old favorite, then set it in the crockpot and forget it!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans Grands! Cinnamon Rolls (5 per can)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

Directions:

  1. Open each can of cinnamon rolls. Reserve the icing. Cut each rolls into 6 pieces.
  2. Place the granulated sugar and cinnamon in a gallon size ziploc bag. Add the cut up cinnamon rolls (the pieces will fall apart a little) to the bag. Seal and shake to coat the pieces with cinnamon sugar.
  3. Stir together the brown sugar and melted butter.
  4. Spray a 5-7 Qt slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. Place half the dough pieces in the bottom of the slow cooker. Pour half the melted butter mixture over the top, then add the rest of the cinnamon roll pieces and the rest of the melted butter.
  5. Cover the slow cooker and cook on high power for about 2 hours. (Check it at one hour, then again at one and a half hours, just to be safe.) The edges will start to brown, but the top will still be a little gooey looking. Turn off the slow cooker and let sit for 5 minutes before serving.
  6. Optional: Drizzle the icing that came with the rolls over the top of the monkey bread in the crockpot, or pour it over like syrup after serving.
  7. Note: Not all slow cookers are created equal. Mine has a high 4 hour setting and that is what I cooked mine on.
  8. Note: The monkey bread will stick as it cools. Serve from the warm slow cooker and make sure that you take it all out before it cools all the way or it’ll require soaking.

Notes:

Substitute regular Grands! Biscuits for a more traditional flavor. Add 1/2 cup chopped nuts or chocolate chips in step 4 for a flavor twist.

  1. Wondering if this would work using a crockpot liner?  Has anyone tried that.  Was thinking easier to get out and easier cleanup.

      I haven’t tried it Sharon but I think it would work just fine. Everything else (dinner-like) that I make using a liner works just fine!

      I’m not sure of the size of those rolls. I used the Grands! ones, that come 5 to a can. I think the ounces of the can I used were 17 ounces each and I googled and I think the regular size rolls are 12 ounces each. So the difference would be 24 ounces (your rolls) to 34 ounces (my rolls). The ratio of 24/34 ounces compared with the 4 ounces of butter means you’d use 2.8 ounces of butter instead, which is about 3 tablespoons.

          Well, 3 12 ounce packs would be 36 ounces. Two 17 ounce packs is 34 ounces, so keeping it the same as called for would probably work.

      I refrigerated mine for a few days (the leftover portion) and it tasted fine! Just make sure to remove it from the slow cooker. Once it cools it’s STUCK! 🙂

  4. I have a larger slow cooker. I want to make this in a bigger batch for a Christmas get together. Can I double everything and if so how long should I cook them?

  8. Just love this idea, but if I wanted to take it to a 6AM meeting, could I make it the night before and warm it up the next morning or would it be too hard? I hate the thought of getting up at 3 AM to do this ! LOL

      No, for sure that would not be good, lol! You can make it the day before and warm it up, just make sure and remove it from the slow cooker before it cools. The sugars become glue!!

  11. I want to make this for a church brunch Sunday. I have a question about it sticking. Are you saying that I need to remove it from the crock pot before I leave for church (before it cools) bc otherwise it would stick or would I be safe to take the crock pot to church to serve it out of the pot? Did anybody have any luck doubling the recipe? Thanks!

      Yes, be sure to remove it before it cools. If you want it to cool in the pan, I would line the pan with parchment paper first. I haven’t done it that way but I’ve seen other crockpot recipes that do it. Doubling – I’m not sure. I want to say it should work but I do worry that the edges will brown too fast for the center. If you try it let me know!

  12. I made this today. It tastes amazing. My only problem was the very middle was still raw and the outer bits were burned black. i cooked it on high for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Do you think 4 hours on low would be better?

      The only answer I have is that not all crockpots cook the same. Some cook hotter in some places; mine always burns on one edge. Yours may cook hotter around the edges than the center. I think in that case cooking on low – but watching the time after an hour and a half – would be a good thing to try. If only they all cooked the same it would be so much easier!

      I think that would work just fine! I do it with normal monkey bread, so it should work with the slow cooker version.

  14. Has anyone tried it with a double batch? If I layer them will they still turn out? We’re having A LOT more people than I originally thought for Sunday brunch.

      It should work as a double batch, but you may want to cook it longer on low. I know, at least in my crockpot, that the outer edges cook faster so lower and slower might be better if it’s fuller.

  15. When making the Crockpot Cinnamon Monkey Bread, you’ve said to cut each of the five cinnamon rolls into six pieces. My question is – how do you keep the cinnamon roll swirls from falling apart once you cut them up? Or, is that what’s supposed to happen?

      They kind of do fall apart, but just try and press them a little and it shouldn’t be too bad.
