Blueberry & Peach Dump Cake

Can I tell you a secret you probably won’t be surprised to hear?

I don’t like peaches.

I know, shocking, right? That the second pickiest person on the planet (my kid being the first) doesn’t like a stone fruit?

A crust loving baker who wouldn’t touch a peach pie with a 10-foot pole?

What will shock you is that Jordan actually likes peaches.

It’s like a paradox or something like that. I often wonder if we are disturbing the natural order of things and interrupting the space-time continuum.

The only thing peachy I do like is a Bellini. I guess if you add enough alcohol to something, it’ll taste good.

But pie? Cake? Cookies? Smoothie? Cut-up on a plate?

No sirree. No thanks. Tastes like feet to me.

Not that I know what feet taste like. I’ve never tasted mine.

I could probably ask Jordan. She can put her toes in her mouth. Does so on a regular basis.

That’s a whole other conversation, however.

Right now we’re on my weird eating habits.

Stay with me, mmmkay?

So a few weeks back we had a party. I made brownies and brownies. A couple of heavy treats. I wanted to make something lighter, fruity. You know, for the girls who watch their weight.

During my whole ADD-what-do-I-make process, Robin posted a Dump Cake recipe and I found a can of peach pie filling in my cabinet. Perfect! I could get rid of the peach pie filling at a party, where it would get eaten by people who don’t think peaches taste like feet.

And yes, canned fruit is still fruit. At one point it hung on a tree. Thus, fruit.

This is the easiest cake you ever made. One dish and that includes the pan.

It’s called a “dump” cake for a reason. You dump everything in the pan. Fruit, cake mix, butter. What’s not to love?

{Pardon the pictures. Some doofus tried to photograph stuff and then realized only afterwards that the camera was in the wrong mode.}

It smelled heavenly. But no way was I gonna like it. It was deadly peach, after all.

There was half left after the party. I picked at the top and man, was that good. Figured I better try a bite, with the fruit. Worst case scenario, I go wash my tongue with bleach.

And guess what?

It didn’t taste like feet! It was GOOD. Like, I ate the rest of the pan myself good. I’m guessing the cake mix, nuts, brown sugar, and butter had something to do with that.

I like peach dump cake. Peaches…well…that’s still open for discussion.

Blueberry & Peach Dump Cake

(Adapted from Bird on a Cake)

Ingredients

  • 1 can peach pie filling
  • 1 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 yellow cake mix
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. Dump a can of peach pie filling in the bottom of a baking dish (a 9×13” pan is good). Sprinkle blueberries over the peaches.
  3. Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly over the top of the fruit. Slice the butter into thin slices (about 1/2 tablespoon each) and space out on top of cake mix. Sprinkle the brown sugar and nuts over the top of the pats of butter.
  4. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown. Serve warm or cold, with whipped cream or ice cream.

  1. OMG I love peaches. LOVE LOVE LOVE them. Buy them buy the barrels every year! Can em, freeze em, eat em raw! I can make a song about them if you’d like? No? Okay….
How about I tell you this looks amazing. YUM.

  2. I’m glad that I could inspire you to make something yummy! Thanks for the link. :0) I haven’t tried a peach and blueberry dump cake…sounds good! And I love pecans on the top too, but my children won’t eat them.

  3. Dump cake seems to be the new it dessert! I like this idea of dumping and forgetting! well at least until the oven timer goes off. awesome!

  4. Blueberries and Peaches are a wonderful combination and you’ve come up with a winner. BTW, I don’t think less of you for not liking peaches. LOL!

  5. Hee! I make a dump cake just like this one and use blueberries and apples. Heavenly! But now you have me thinking about the peaches!! :-) This looks SO GOOD, Dorothy!

  6. Ive never made a dump cake but have been tempted so many times – they just sound too easy to even turn out?! Like…really? It’s THAT easy? Guess so b/c this looks awesome!

  7. Try a peach margarita. Enough tequila would make salmon edible for me. I’m not crazy about peaches either. I don’t understand why people mess with stone fruit when strawberries exist.

  8. I like peaches but I hate feet, so something must be different about the way we taste things :) I would totally eat this, all that butter and brown sugar look like they worked their magic!

  9. I pretty much made the same dang thing last week. How funny. I used fresh peaches and raspberries instead of the blueberries. And unfortunately, mine didn’t have brown sugar or nuts. Mental note for next time. I put oatmeal and cinnamon on top and it was pretty damn good for how easy it was.

FYI, yes, you are an insanely odd eater. I ate a fresh white peach with dinner and it was heaven. No foot aftertaste to speak of. :o ) I also ate the very last homemade peanut butter cup. You should totally make them. I thought of you when I was whippin’ ‘em up. They’re right up your alley. So friggin’ good.

  10. haha! Ok, so I had to giggle a little when you said you made the “light fruity” dessert for the girls watching their weight! I giggled because I love dump cake and all that butter and sugar that goes into it…it is only good for watching your weight go on!!! Ok, so I love love love peaches…and have never ever thought they tasted like feet:-) I am really impressed that you took a bite of something you were sure you wouldn’t like!! It looks amazing!!!

  11. NOOOOOOO! Not fruit, I cannot take it. I hate fruit in desserts, it is so wrong! Sad thing is this looks good, sigh;(

  12. Oh how I LOVE the combo of peach/blueberries. I have a similar recipe that I make from scratch with fresh peaches and could eat it daily. I’m so proud of you for extending yourself like this. =) Love the ease of using a cake mix, so I am pinning this one! Thanks for sharing.

  13. Wow! Looks delish! I may have to make this when my Mom comes to visit. Well done. =]

  14. I love peaches!! It’s one of my annual celebrations, when summer comes and I can bite into a fresh one and bake with them. I’d happily take your share. And I still think “dump” is a not so palatable name for wonderful-looking cakes. :)

  15. Hahahahahaha god, I remember thinking the same thing *sadly* when I saw this on your counter at the party! A peach dump cake? Whyyyyyyyyy did she have to use peaches?! Now I wish I would have stayed longer to try it because it looked amazing and smelled amazing, and if you hate peaches and liked it, I’m bound to love it. I swear, y’all are gonna convert me to peaches and carrot cake one of these days.

  16. this looks really good to me!! I pinned it – my MIL would just adore this!

  17. I’m not a peach fan either (except I’m with ya on the Bellini), but I do love all versions of dump cake I have tried. I’m sure this would be no exception! (can you really go wrong with a stick of butter/cake mix/brown sugar? I think not.)

  18. All of your recipes look great. I just happened to click on this one. I have a link party on Wednesdays, and I would love it if you would link this and any other posts. It is called Wednesdays Adorned From Above Link Party. It runs from Wednesday to Sundays.

  19. I’m fantasizing about what that would taste like with ice cream. I love both peaches and blueberries, but I’ve never baked with them together. Must try!

  20. I’m sad that you hate peaches, because I LOVE them. But, this dump cake looks amazing! I’ve never made a dump cake before, but I think I’m going to have to try this one!

  21. You are funny! I happen to love peaches! This looks great! No idea what feet taste like, but my son told me when he was 4 that our dogs feet tasted like popcorn…don’t ask.

  22. You are cracking me up. How can you not like peach pie?? haha. I can leave apple, blueberry, and cherry alone just fine, but I love to bake with peaches.

Funnier to me is that you think they taste like feet. (Funny now. Won’t be funny the next time I eat a peach and decide that they DO taste like feet.) I might be guilty of compulsive suggestive imagination when it comes to food. Thanks a lot!

  23. Dorothy,
You are so funny in your posts, I know you are laughing as you write them :) I LOVE peaches and blueberries is a new love of mine. Didn’t like blueberries (the actual fruit or fresh ones) in anything until a few years ago. Now I try all the blueberry recipes. I will definitely try this one too. Thanks for sharing not only your wonderful recipes each week but your amazing sense of humor.

I’m having so much fun visiting the participants of this blog linky party.
So many wonderful and creative ideas.
Wow! Check out the butter. I love a dessert recipe that has a stick of butter in it.

  26. Peach dump cake– I love the name! I can’t believe you don’t like peaches, but with all that golden brown sugar, butter and cake mix over top, I’m not surprised that you liked it. I don’t think even the most avid peach-haters could resist!

  27. Love Dump Cake! Peaches? Not so much… But the blueberries might help so I’ll have to give this a try, thanks!

  28. That looks so delicious, Dorothy! The only thing I don’t like about peaches is the fuzz, but know they are smooth varieties so I am all set….love fresh peaches from a tree :-)
