Hostess Cupcake Football overhead shot with words

Sometimes I feel like blog world does things weirdly. Like, we post pumpkin recipes in August and start baking for Christmas in September.

It’s just strange.

Back at the beginning of football season, a few football-themed things came through my reader. But the big “football blogging event” is at the end of the season, for the Super Bowl.

But here, in my house, football kind of rules the day.

My husband, as you know, is a fantasy football player. There is a football game on at least 3 days a week, and soon that will become four, thanks to Saturday night football. So, I mean, I kind of deal with football all through Fall.

And, add to that, Jordan is a cheerleader this year. She cheers for the local flag football team. It’s so stinking cute, and way less of a commitment than “real” kid cheerleading. There is no need for expensive uniforms or hairpieces. She wears a t-shirt and black shorts, and we have a two-hour per week committment.

{Yes, I said hairpieces. I know a mom who was in the “real” cheer with her Kindergargener. Her daughter needed a hairpiece for competition because her hair was short. Move over Dance Moms and Toddlers & Tiaras. Kiddie Cheer should be the next big thing on TLC.}

Our last game of the cheer season was a few weeks ago. So I needed a treat. A last minute treat, because with hectic life and Halloween, I kind of forgot.

Enter Hostess Cakes. I wracked my brain for an easy football recipe that kids would love. And, I mean, the Hostess Cupcakes totally look like the center of a football, don’t they? The iconic white stripe looks like the laces. Perfect!

All I did to make the “brown” of the football was to melt some canned chocolate icing and dip the tops of the cupakes in them. Shove them together and they look like a football!

And of course, I couldn’t forget the pom poms. I mean, my kid is a cheerleader.

All I did for those was melt some candy melts and pipe them on in a firecracker pattern. Jordan cheers for the 49ers, so her poms are red and white. Use your team colors to personalize them!

Seriously, an easy recipe. And, I mean, it’s made from Hostess Cakes! Kids love them.

{And so do I!}

Hostess Cupcake Football

10 cupcakes for the football, 2 for each set of poms

1/4 cup canned chocolate icing

Candy melts in your desired colors

1. Unwrap each cupcake. Place the canned icing in a small bowl. Heat for 30 seconds in the microwave, stir. Dip 8 cupcakes in the icing to cover the white stripe. Leave two plain, with the stripe. Chill until the icing solidifies (it will still be sticky).

2. Melt the candy melts in microwave safe bowls. Place each color in a separate ziploc bag and snip off the tip. Pipe stripes of candy in a firework pattern. Let harden.

3. To serve, arrange the cupcakes like a football, with the 2 striped cupcakes in the center and the 8 dipped around the edge, with the pom poms off to the side.

  1. This is SUCH a cute idea! We are a huge football watching house (myself included). My college football team is ranked #1 in the nation right now, so I’m a happy camper. 🙂 This is a perfect idea for our game watching party this Saturday night!
