A Frozen Mai Tai is the classic cocktail but blended frozen so it’s the perfect summer drink! With pineapple and orange, almond and rum it’s the perfect tropical cocktail!

A creamy yellow piña colada served in a curved glass, garnished with a pineapple wedge and a red cherry. Another similar drink is blurred in the background on a light surface.

Move over Mai Tai, the FROZEN Mai Tai is in town! This easy cocktail is a frozen riff on the classic tiki drink and it’s become our new favorite along side a piña colada and a daiquiri. I had fun testing the ratios on this recipe and you’ll be please to know it’s the perfect combination of sweet, strong, and tropical!

Five bottles of drink ingredients, a jar of lime juice, a can of pineapple juice, and a bowl of pineapple chunks are arranged on a white surface with a light gray background.

Frozen Mai Tai Ingredients

  • Rum is the star in a mai tai. My classic recipe uses lots (and lots) of rum. This frozen version uses white rum and gold rum (or spiced rum). Use your favorite brands. I skipped the dark rum float because it will just sink to the bottom.
  • Rum needs orange, so we use triple sec (or cointreau) and it also needs some tartness from lime juice.
  • Orgeat is the classic almond flavored addition to any mai tai, bringing a toasted, nutty, almond paste taste. You can use amaretto if you don’t have orgeat syrup, or a drop of almond extract.
  • Orgeat syrup is non-alcoholic and can be found online on Amazon, Total Wine, or at places like TJ Maxx that sell coffee syrups.
  • I love adding pineapple juice to my mai tais, so instead of using ice to blend the frozen drink, I used frozen pineapple (and some juice as well).

Dorothy’s Testing Notes

  • Add the liquid to the blender first for better results.
  • If you want it more frothy, you can add more pineapple or use ice.
  • Feel free to use ice instead of frozen pineapple, but it will be more watered down.
  • Too strong? Add more juice or pineapple.
