What is a Salty Dog Drink?
A salty dog is made of gin or vodka, and grapefruit juice, and is finished with a salted rim. It’s a classic cocktail recipe because it has the perfect balance between sweet and flavorful. It differs from a Greyhound cocktail only in that it has a salty rim.
I turned this easy drink recipe into a party punch because that’s kind of my MO. This is a flavorful citrus drink that takes no time at all – and it’s easy to make into a party punch!

Ingredients Needed
- Juice: grapefruit juice is what makes this drink what it is. You can use fresh grapefruit juice or bottled.
- Vodka: I’ll be using vodka since it’s what I had on hand but this classic cocktail is also made with gin, a popular choice.
- Soda: to give this cocktail some life, I’m pouring my favorite lemon-lime soda. Use any carbonated drink you think would pair well here, even regular club soda is OK!
- Lemon slices: or lime wedges for garnish and an extra kick of refreshing citrus.
- Salt: I’m using kosher salt to rim the glasses

How to make a salty dog drink punch
- A classic salty dog recipe is made with a cocktail shaker and is tart, with sweetness added with simple syrup. We’re making punch so I used lemon-lime soda in place of simple syrup.
- Place all ingredients into your pitcher and stir – be sure to add the soda right before serving.
- Serve with salt rimmed glasses – a must for a salty dog drink! You can garnish with lime slices or even rosemary sprigs or other herbs.

Expert Tips
- You can use a combination of lemon-lime soda and club soda, or diet lemon-lime soda.
- To salt the rim of your glass, you can use grapefruit, lemon, or lime slices.
- This cocktail is normally served in a rocks glass.
FAQs
If you leave out the salt from a Saly Dog drink it’s called a “Greyhound”.
Yes! Prep all of your ingredients and mix in a pitcher and store in refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add the soda just before serving so it doesn’t go flat.
