We all know that birthdays are a big deal in my house, even if you’re the dog. We always celebrate Abby’s birthday with Pupcakes or this easy dog cake recipe. It’s her favorite kind of cake too, peanut butter made with applesauce and frosted with whipped cream. Abby loves whipped cream; it’s like her favorite treat EVER.

This easy dog cake makes a 6-inch dog cake (or a 9×5 loaf pan). It’s filled with peanut butter and applesauce and frosted with whipped cream – the perfect dog cake recipe for a puppy party and it’s done in under 30 minutes.

Safety First

IMPORTANT: When choosing peanut butter for your dog cake, always check the label for Xylitol (also known as birch sugar). This artificial sweetener is toxic to dogs. Stick to natural peanut butters where the only ingredients are peanuts and salt to ensure your furry friend stays safe and happy.

Other things to avoid adding to your dog cake (but not limited to): avocado, grapes, chocolate, anything with caffeine, and raisins. For a more comprehensive list of unsafe dog foods, check out this list at the ASPCA. You should always consult your vet before feeding your dogs anything but dog food.

Making a dog cake is so much easier than a cake for a human. It has simple ingredients and seriously, they don’t care how it looks! You don’t need to buy a dog cake mix, just make your own easy cake!

Safe Dog Cake Ingredients

  • Sugar isn’t great for dogs, but since Abby loves her treats on the sweet side, I add a bit of honey to the cake batter. Do not use any artificial sugars!
  • You can use whole wheat flour if you want, but I used all-purpose flour.
  • Dogs love peanut butter – but only use one without xylitol.
  • Applesauce – you can also use pumpkin puree or mashed banana
  • Oil, leavening, egg – these are all the components that make a cake into a cake.
  • I kept the frosting simple by just beating some unsweetened heavy whipping cream. Dogs LOVE whipped cream! But be sure not to give them too much at once, as the high fat content in the whipped cream can upset their tummy if they eat a lot of it.
  • Another frosting option: mix additional peanut butter with plain Greek yogurt – dogs love yogurt!

  1. This was so delicious, we all ate it with our pup and wanted to make another! We added a little powdered sugar to the whipped cream.

  2. Hello! I came up on your site by sheer accident, and, what a wonderful site it is. I have made your recipe “its all about the crust” with the shortbread base, cream cheese and cool whip. It is scrumptious and out of this world. It is a breeze to make to boot. I have ordered your book and want to wish you and yours a magical Christmas and happy 2025.
PS: You can count me as a fan.
