This Easy Dog Cake is the ultimate way to celebrate your pup’s birthday or “gotcha” day! Made with safe, wholesome ingredients like pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and applesauce, this recipe is as healthy as it is delicious. It takes just 10 minutes to prep, and I’ve included both oven and microwave instructions so you can have a treat ready in no time.

We all know that birthdays are a big deal in my house, even if you’re the dog. We always celebrate Abby’s birthday with Pupcakes or this easy dog cake recipe. It’s her favorite kind of cake too, peanut butter made with applesauce and frosted with whipped cream. Abby loves whipped cream; it’s like her favorite treat EVER.
This easy dog cake makes a 6-inch dog cake (or a 9×5 loaf pan). It’s filled with peanut butter and applesauce and frosted with whipped cream – the perfect dog cake recipe for a puppy party and it’s done in under 30 minutes.

Making a dog cake is so much easier than a cake for a human. It has simple ingredients and seriously, they don’t care how it looks! You don’t need to buy a dog cake mix, just make your own easy cake!
Safe Dog Cake Ingredients
- Sugar isn’t great for dogs, but since Abby loves her treats on the sweet side, I add a bit of honey to the cake batter. Do not use any artificial sugars!
- You can use whole wheat flour if you want, but I used all-purpose flour.
- Dogs love peanut butter – but only use one without xylitol.
- Applesauce – you can also use pumpkin puree or mashed banana
- Oil, leavening, egg – these are all the components that make a cake into a cake.
- I kept the frosting simple by just beating some unsweetened heavy whipping cream. Dogs LOVE whipped cream! But be sure not to give them too much at once, as the high fat content in the whipped cream can upset their tummy if they eat a lot of it.
- Another frosting option: mix additional peanut butter with plain Greek yogurt – dogs love yogurt!

Dorothy’s Expert Dog Cake Tips
- The best part about making a cake for your dog is that you don’t have to worry about if you over cook it. They don’t care if it’s dry!
- Be sure to review the safety instructions at the top of this post.
- You can also cook this in the microwave. Place in a microwave safe dish and heat on high power for 2-5 minutes.

Just made this for my collier’s 2and birthday. I put in 1tbsp of coconut oil instead of 2tbsp of oil and used s.r. flour (and omitted the baking powder and soda) and spread a thin layer of whipped cream on top. Used a loaf tin and my oldest shaped it like a bone. The dog is quite a fussy eater, but with some encouragement licked all the cream off the top and then demolished the lot! Highly recommended!!!
Both my dogs went INSANE for this cake! Made it tonight for the older one’s 5th birthday and we have never seen anything like the reaction they had. 🐾
This came out perfect, I baked it in a soufflé type dish and was a great size, rose nice and high, came right out using nonstick spray and my dog loved it!
Can I leave the peanut butter out or replace with something else? Severe peanut allergy in our home.
Hello would love to try this. But i want to swap out the egg? What can i use to replace it?
also with applesauce do i replace it with equal part mashed banana
Thank you 🙂
I haven’t ever omitted the egg, but you could add more banana. And yes you can sub banana for applesauce.
