This Easy Dog Cake is the ultimate way to celebrate your pup’s birthday or “gotcha” day! Made with safe, wholesome ingredients like pumpkin puree, peanut butter, and applesauce, this recipe is as healthy as it is delicious. It takes just 10 minutes to prep, and I’ve included both oven and microwave instructions so you can have a treat ready in no time.

We all know that birthdays are a big deal in my house, even if you’re the dog. We always celebrate Abby’s birthday with Pupcakes or this easy dog cake recipe. It’s her favorite kind of cake too, peanut butter made with applesauce and frosted with whipped cream. Abby loves whipped cream; it’s like her favorite treat EVER.
This easy dog cake makes a 6-inch dog cake (or a 9×5 loaf pan). It’s filled with peanut butter and applesauce and frosted with whipped cream – the perfect dog cake recipe for a puppy party and it’s done in under 30 minutes.

Making a dog cake is so much easier than a cake for a human. It has simple ingredients and seriously, they don’t care how it looks! You don’t need to buy a dog cake mix, just make your own easy cake!
Safe Dog Cake Ingredients
- Sugar isn’t great for dogs, but since Abby loves her treats on the sweet side, I add a bit of honey to the cake batter. Do not use any artificial sugars!
- You can use whole wheat flour if you want, but I used all-purpose flour.
- Dogs love peanut butter – but only use one without xylitol.
- Applesauce – you can also use pumpkin puree or mashed banana
- Oil, leavening, egg – these are all the components that make a cake into a cake.
- I kept the frosting simple by just beating some unsweetened heavy whipping cream. Dogs LOVE whipped cream! But be sure not to give them too much at once, as the high fat content in the whipped cream can upset their tummy if they eat a lot of it.
- Another frosting option: mix additional peanut butter with plain Greek yogurt – dogs love yogurt!

Dorothy’s Expert Dog Cake Tips
- The best part about making a cake for your dog is that you don’t have to worry about if you over cook it. They don’t care if it’s dry!
- Be sure to review the safety instructions at the top of this post.
- You can also cook this in the microwave. Place in a microwave safe dish and heat on high power for 2-5 minutes.

My pups loved this I substituted pumpkin for the applesauce and added in extra peanut butter turned out great!
Hi I googled that baking powders not safe for dogs to eat can I just not put it? Or it won’t come out correct?
You have to go with your gut on this – of course I don’t recommend your dog eat all of the cupcakes, because that will cause an issue – but in small doses it’s been fine for our dog in baked goods.
Made this for our dog’s 12th birthday. She loved it, as did our other 3. I wanted to keep it grain free so I substituted regular flour with almond flour. Will definitely make it again for the next birthday.
Is self Raising flour ok to use in this?
Yes, omit the baking powder.
And no, he didn’t have the whole thing.
I made this cake for my dog for his 7th birthday and it made him SO sick! He threw up 3 times in the 24 hours after he had this. I could’ve given him some chicken instead… 🙁
You should definitely make sure he isn’t allergic to something. Many, many dogs have eaten this – mine included – but maybe he has a sensitive tummy for grains or PB or dairy.
Did you peanut butter have xylitol in it? They should get peanut butter WITHOUT xylitol.
So sorry to hear that, but like Dorothy said, your dog may be allergic to something in it. I think that Delinda is correct, and so I use a dog-friendly peanut butter, my dog loves it, and she gets a funny tummy a lot, but this peanut butter does nothing like that to her tummy, so I would recommend Pets Purest Peanut Butter For Dogs!
