Easy Healthy Fruit Dip

The struggle is real when it comes to fruit and my family! I’m always looking for ways to get them (and me!) to eat more fruit and this easy yogurt fruit dip is one of my favorite secret weapons. Unlike other recipes that are made with cream cheese or pudding mix, this version has yogurt so it’s lighter and less sweet.

It takes minutes to make and is flavored with fresh orange juice and zest for a citrus twist. What I love about it is that I can switch up the flavors by using different kinds of yogurt and adding different extracts – it’s fun to experiment and come up with new flavor combinations.

It’s great as a snack or light dessert and always disappears fast. If you’re looking for ways to get your kids to eat more fruit you have to try this yogurt version.

How to Make Healthier Fruit Dip

It sort of defeats the purpose of eating more fruit if the dip you serve it with is loaded with lots of extra sugar and fat, right? Well, I’ve played around with ways to make this easy dip healthier and this version is just perfect. It’s still sweet and creamy, but a little lighter than other ones I’ve tried.

The base of the dip is made with Cool Whip so it has a light and fluffy texture but instead of adding marshmallow cream or cream cheese, I like to use yogurt for creaminess. It lightens up the dip and also adds a nice tanginess.

You can use whatever kind of yogurt you like fat-free, sugar-free, plain yogurt, or Greek yogurt. You can use plain yogurt or try flavored one to switch it up.

I like to use regular vanilla yogurt which is already sweetened, but depending on what you use you can add some extra sugar depending on how sweet you want your dip. I don’t usually add extra so I encourage you to play around with it to find your perfect combination!

Be sure to taste as you’re making it – you can always add a little more sweetness, but it’s hard to take it out if you add too much. You can also sweeten your dip with a sugar substitute, honey, or maple syrup.

Flavoring this Dip

There are tons of options for flavored yogurt, but I usually go with vanilla because it pairs really well with the fresh orange juice and orange zest that’s also in the dip. I love the fresh citrus flavor with the creamy yogurt and whipped topping, but here are more ideas for flavoring your dip if you want to experiment:

  • Add a touch of vanilla extract
  • Switch out the orange juice for fresh lime or lemon juice.
  • Try a different extract to add a different flavor – there are so many kinds to choose from. You can try almond or a little mint extract but I’ve also seen fruit extracts like strawberry, raspberry and even mango that would work well, too.

Once you have your ingredients all you do is mix them up together. You can serve the dip right away or chill it in the refrigerator. It keeps well for up to four days!

What to Serve with Fruit Dip

Of course, you can serve the dip with fruit! Pretty much any fruit you like will work, but here are some of my favorites:

  • Sliced bananas
  • Whole strawberries
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Sliced apples
  • Raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries
  • Sliced melon like cantaloupe or watermelon
  • Grapes
  • Orange segments

You can also serve this dip with other snacks like pretzels, vanilla wafers, or ginger cookies – it may not be as healthy, but they’re delicious! Sometimes I like to do a whole platter of fruit and other snacks for dipping. It’s great when you you’re serving a crowd.

This yogurt dip is so versatile and is such a fun way to get everyone to eat more fruit. You may want to double the batch, though, because it will be gone before you know it!

  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Recipe Notes

Note on sugar: if you’re using vanilla yogurt, taste before adding sugar, it probably won’t need it. If you’re using plain yogurt, taste as well. I liked it without the sugar but some might want it sweeter. You can also use a sugar substitute or honey or maple syrup.
