Chocolate Pudding from Scratch

Puddings are one of my go to things to make for a party because of how easy they are to make–and they are always a hit. I used to use chocolate instant pudding until I made this recipe – now I can make pudding from scratch and it tastes so much better!

The best part about this recipe is how you can add to it. My favorite thing is to turn the chocolate pudding into a s’mores pudding. All you have to do is add graham crackers and marshmallows and then you have yourself a s’mores pudding! So however you’re feeling on the day you can make a chocolate or s’mores pudding with this recipe.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • You can add whatever you want into the pudding, like graham crackers and marshmallows to make it s’mores!
  • You can serve it with so many great dippers, or just a spoon!
  • It is great in any season!
ingredients in s'mores pudding.

Ingredients Needed

  • Cornstarch: thickens the pudding
  • Cocoa Powder: Is one of the chocolates we add to for a rich chocolate flavor.
  • Milk: you can use dairy or non-dairy
  • Chocolate Chips: milk or semi-sweet or both!
  • S’more ingredients: Chopped graham crackers and mini marshmallows

Semi-Homemade Help

Just want a s’mores pudding and don’t want to deal with making it from scratch? Substitute a box of instant chocolate pudding mix or cook ‘n serve pudding and make as directed on the box.

How to make simple chocolate pudding

  • Whisk sugars, cornstarch, and cocoa in a medium sauce pan. Whisk in milk and place over medium heat. Bring to a boil, whisking often, and once it boils whisk constantly for several minutes, until the mixture thickens. (Note: it won’t get really thick, just thicker, like a thick soup.)
  • Stir in chocolate chips and butter and whisk until melted. Remove from heat, whisk in vanilla. Transfer to a heat safe bowl.
  • Cover the top of the pudding with plastic wrap (the plastic wrap should be touching the pudding). Let cool for about 15 minutes at room temp, then chill until it’s cold and firms up, about 4-6 hours.
  • To assemble pudding: Place pudding in a large bowl. Stir in marshmallows and chopped chocolate covered grahams. Divide among serving dishes and garnish with extra marshmallows, cookie crumbs, and/or graham crackers. Best served day of, or the marshmallows get stale.

Expert Tips

  • If you want to turn this pudding into a s’mores pudding I recommend using chopped, chocolate covered graham crackers and mini marshmallows as your add ins.
  • Let the pudding cool at room temperature for 15 minutes and then chill for about 4-6 hours to let it firm.
  • It would be best to serve day of and if you want to add anything in it you should do that day of as well to avoid the pudding from getting stale.

  1. hahaa.. I laugh besides I have so been there. Our fire alarms have been going off like crazy the past couple of months and every time our dog goes nuts. You would think we would just change them all at the same time.. nope. That would be easy. Instead we like to wait until its 3am when they go off and then change it. 🙂

On a side not, why I’m really here. This s’more pudding looks a-mazing and that cookbook looks even better. Pinning. 🙂

    1. I always have the best intentions to change them all at the same time. Then I remember I have to get the ladder and I find other things to do, like bake brownies. 🙂

      1. Oh yeah, baking brownies vs. changing alarm. Baking brownies so wins every time!

  2. We are so much alike, it’s cra-cra!! 😉 I can’t remember if I said that to you the other day or not, so sorry if I already said it! Lol! Love this s’mores pudding, and adore that book!!

  3. I love this idea! Homemade pudding is divine. Our animals are completely insane as well. Poor Ginger!

  4. We had a golden retriever too, and he was a little… Umm, quirky at times. He wasn’t too scared of anything, but he sure ate (and begged for) some strange stuff! But they’re so sweet and lovable that it’s easy to overlook their quirks. Most of the time. 😉

And there’s nothing wrong with making s’mores indoors! I’m scared to light a match, let alone start an entire bonfire, so I go with the culinary torch route. 🙂 Love the sound of your s’mores dip!!

  5. Sounds delicious! And the poor puppy! I hate it when ours starts shaking over stuff. Since we are still kid-less, we freak out like it’s our first baby and take her to the vet, haha! You are clearly much more level headed. 🙂

  6. You bring the s’mores pudding, I bring the pizza and we would have the perfect weekend dinner! YUM!

  7. Your dog is a character! What would we do without weird pets? Gotta love them. 🙂 Gotta love this s’mores pudding, too!

  8. I’m all for having s’mores year round! This is the perfect way to enjoy them when it’s hot, humid, and buggy outside (like it has been and will continue to be for the next week!)!
