What is an Oreo Truffle Brownie?

I created this recipe years and years ago to combine my two favorite things: brownies and Oreo Truffles.

These brownies have three delicious chocolatey layers:

  1. Homemade one bowl brownies made with cocoa powder – super simple.
  2. Oreo Truffles – that classic Oreo and cream cheese mixture is spread evenly over the top.
  3. Melted chocolate is poured all over the top to coat.

Like I said, chocolate heaven!

Crazy for Cookies, Brownies and Bars

This recipe is another sneak peek into my upcoming cookbook! Last month I shared my Mochadoodles from the Crazy Cookie section and this is one from the amazing brownie chapter.

My cookbook is available for pre-order! It’s a hard cover book with a photo of every recipe – 85 of my favorite cookies, brownies and bars. Classics to crazy – you’ll find something you love! Learn more about it here or PRE-ORDER!

Ingredients in the Ultimate Oreo Brownies

Vegetable Oil: Starting with oil makes cocoa brownies even fudgier in texture. Plus – no mixer needed! You’ll also need the oil to help melt the chocolate for the coating.

Sugar: Granulated sugar is used for the sweetness.

Cocoa Powder: Use regular unsweetened cocoa, although you can substitute dutch process if you want.

Vanilla, Salt, Flour: Typical brownie ingredients.

Oreos: For the Oreo Truffles, of course! Use regular Oreos or your favorite flavor.

Cream Cheese: Make sure it’s room temperature. The cream cheese mixed with the cookie crumbs is how the truffles are made.

Chocolate Chips: For the coating. Use your favorite brand/flavor.

How to Make Oreo Truffle Brownies

  1. Place oil in a large bowl. Stir in sugar and cocoa powder until smooth.
  2. Add eggs, vanilla, and salt, stir to combine, then slowly mix in the flour.
  3. Spread batter into a 9×9-inch pan that’s been lined with foil and sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.
  4. Bake for 21-25 minutes or until the brownies just lose that glossy sheen around the edges and a toothpick inserted 1-inch from the edge comes out clean. Cool completely before topping.
  5. How to make Oreo Truffles: Finely crush Oreo cookies in a food processor. Remove 2 tablespoons crumbs for topping. Add cream cheese to food processor and pulse until mixture is combined and smooth, scraping down the sides of the machine as needed. Spread over brownies and press to compact.
  6. How to make chocolate coating: Melt chocolate chips and oil in a microwave safe bowl (on high in 30 second increments, stirring between each, until melted and smooth). Spread evenly over Oreo truffle mixture using an offset spatula. Sprinkle with Oreo cookie crumbs. Chill to set before slicing into bars.

Tips

  • Originally I’d make this using a brownie mix. Want to do that? Go ahead and use a pouch brownie mix (that makes an 8×8 or 9×9-inch pan).
  • Use ANY flavor Oreo to change up the flavor!
  • I add the oil to the chocolate to help it melt easier. You can also use shortening in place of the oil.

Brownie FAQ

Why use vegetable oil in brownies?

My favorite brownie recipe uses butter, but it also uses baking chocolate. When a brownie uses only cocoa, baking with the oil makes them nice and fudgy.

What cocoa powder is best for brownies?

I use regular Hershey’s Unsweetened Cocoa Powder, or you can use Special Dark. Because there is no baking soda in this recipe you can use Dutch Process if you want.

How do I melt chocolate chips?

I like to use a paper bowl for melting – I find glass burns the chocolate, plus it makes clean up easier. Melt on 50% power in 30 second increments, stirring between each, until melted and smooth. Be sure not to get any water anywhere near the chocolate or it will seize.

Why won’t my chocolate chips melt?

This sometimes happens when chocolate has melted and hardened again (before you even bought it sometimes). Adding the oil should help solve that problem; the oil gets hot in the microwave and helps coax the chips to melt.

How to store Oreo Truffle Brownies?

Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days, in the refrigerator.

Can you freeze brownies?

Freeze these for up to 3 months.

  1. Just made these with a King Sized Hershey bar in the brownie layer (a steal from your recent cookie truffle post), semi-sweet chocolate chips on top of the brownies, and chocolate cream Oreos. If lightening strikes me today, I’ll die a happy gal thanks to this recipe. Fantastic!!!

  2. Made these today for my mom to take to work. I let the edges get a bit too hard (always forget JUST how much the brownies harden after removing from the oven – gotta take them out way before a toothpick comes out clean!!) But I think the moist truffle layer will make up for it. I just used the icing packet that came with the brownie mix instead of using chocolate chips and decorated the top with chopped Easter chocolate mini eggs candies!! I’d like to try making these again using peanut butter sandwich cookies, and also using vanilla sandwich cookies with strawberry cream cheese (I’ve done that for making the actual truffles before and people love it, so I can only imagine that adding a layer of brownies to that would be excellent!!

    1. I’m glad you liked them! Sorry they cooked too much. I always err on the side of underbaked with brownies!

      1. Apparently I got rave reviews and recipe requests for these, so I shared the recipe and told them to check out your blog for other dangerously good looking recipes!! Thanks for the AMAZING blog – The pictures and clean layout are quick ‘sellers’ for your recipes even before you realize how good the actual thing is!

      2. Ok, so I just made these again – this time using peanut butter sandwich cookies and peanut butter chips. Got good reviews again and a recipe request – I sent them the link to your blog!!
